Whether of not you know, there are secrets that you have that someone may want. Think about it. Your social security number, your credit card information, bank account information and other similar items. There are also conversations that you have within your home, car, office or while you’re on your cell phone. Believe it or not, people bugged people every day and for the strangest reasons. Below are some of the reasons.

Business spying is big business. You are about to bid on a profitable job. It is important for you and your staff to really consider the deal in all of its aspects. So you have meetings of those planners who need to know what is going on and what your project bid positions (pricing and the like) are going to be. The next thing you know, the company down the street enters a project bid that duplicates your own, right to the letter – except for one thing. They offer a better price.

Jealousy. An ex-husband, ex-wife, ex-girlfriend or ex-boyfriend that just could not let go. These are very common people that purchase and install bugging devices. Whether they be hidden cameras, audio bugs, spyware for your computers or spy software for your cell phone. Many times, ex’s that believe that you may have moved on and can’t stand the idea of that but cannot get information from you, your family or friends resort to bugging you for that information.

Child Custody Cases. Once a couple is separated, then comes the child custody battle. In order to win that battle, which becomes the most important thing in each of the angry couple’s minds, you need evidence. Inside information. Many times, people resort to bugging their ex in order to determine information on their itineraries, their friends, their conversations and habits. They then use that information to obtain the evidence they need to win their case.

Some indications that you may be bugged

A strange feeling will come over you when you thing that you’re being bugged. You start to notice that people know things that you either said or typed on your computer. The daily things in your life that you believed were safe and secure, have now become common knowledge to people.

Regarding a business, whenever your competitors show that they know your private matters, or when you smell that people who should not know those things do know them, or when you read an article about yourself in the newspaper or hear your secrets being talked about on the radio – but you never told anyone or gave an interview – it is time for you to suspect that you have been bugged.

In turn, information that you were working on or speaking of confidentially are not out in the public and you did put them there. That is a problem.

How to determined if you are being bugged

1. First thing you must do is not change your normal routine, conversation and actions. Try to remain calm as you may alter the actions of the person bugging you if they know you know. Do not act upset. Continue to act like you are unaware of the possible invasion of your privacy.

2. Think hard to determine if you or someone in your family is a potential target. Try to answer the following questions: Does anyone in your family work with confidential information? Is the information such that it would be worth spying on you or them for access to it? Is it possible that your spouse thinks you are unfaithful? Do you have an ex-husband, wife, girlfriend or boyfriend that took the separation hard?

3. Try to pay attention to your phone during your telephone conversations. Observed if there are any volume changes, any static, any popping or other strange sounds during your conversations. Amateur eavesdropping equipment often creates these types of disturbances as their equipment is less expensive and of lesser quality.

4. Listen to and look at your phone while not on a call. Try to pay attention to any sounds that come from your phone even when not on a call. If you hear any sounds at all, they could be indicators that your phone may be bugged. Certain types of bugs use amplifiers while other types listen in to what is being said in range of the phone. When the microphone on your phone is turned on from a different location, there may be an indicator light showing that the mic or phone is active even when you’re not on it.

5. Regarding your residence, make sure you inspect your locks. If the locks suddenly feel off or stick, it is possible they were recently manipulated.

6. Be aware of all of the items in your home or office. Any item that was recently added or doesn’t look familiar, things that hide in plain site, with bugs are often placed without the subjects being aware of it. The most common types of hidden cameras or microphones that are hidden in everyday items come in many forms. The most common forms are radios, clocks, sprinkler heads, picture frames, lamps, air purifiers, DVD players, CD Players, plants and exit signs. Also, remember to keep in mind that “gifts” can often contain eavesdropping devices. These devices, given to you can be activated upon being plugged in. Common bugged gifts are power adapters, pagers, pens, dispensers, calculators, briefcase and CD players.

7. Notice any radio or television interference in your car, home or office that was not previously there. Some bugging devices can emit signals that interfere with radio and television signals.

8. Try to look for any slightly misplaced items. Often professionals enter the home or office while the victim is not there to plant the bugs. Take special note of this if you were a burglary victim but everything was in place. This includes smoke detectors, electrical outlets, vents, furniture and electrical plates.

9. Make sure you scan the ceilings and floors of your home or office. Small discolorations in the ceiling or bumps in the floor are often the location of small video cameras. Drop ceilings are most common for hiding cameras or mics as there is plenty of room above to hide cameras, recorders or hard wire the devices in for long term use. Make sure you are aware of any debris near walls or randomly on the floor, chipped tiles or sagging ceiling tiles are signs that they have been recently moved and may contain hidden cameras.

10. Review your calendar. Look at how many unscheduled repairmen visits have been happening in the past month or few months. When these people are let in to fix an imaginary problem, they are installing the eavesdropping devices.

11. Pay attention to repair workers and any vehicles withing a block of your residence or office. If you see repair vehicles or workers more than three times, you are under surveillance. If you see someone sitting in a car for hours at a time, they could be there to listen in on bugs in your home of office or could be a Private Investigator in the neighborhood conducting a surveillance on you or a neighbor.

12. Make sure you have in your arsenal, a bug detector. There are small bug detectors that fit in your pocket and will vibrate to alert you of bugging devices. There are also ones that attach to key chains, however those usually do not work that well. Make sure that you use one that has an indicator light showing the strength of the signal it detects. Use them to check your house, car and office on a weekly basis.

13. Hire a professional. Contact a professional private investigator to conduct a complete bug sweep of your home, office and car. What you may miss, they will not. Usually rates for de-bugging a home will run approximately $ 500.00 depending on the size of the house or office. Each Investigator will bill their services differently. Some will bill by the square foot, some by the amount of rooms and some for their time present at your home or office.
