Cyber Cheating Cited as Reason for Many Divorces

Flirting in the online world can lead to real world infidelity. In fact, it’s becoming one of the main reasons couples split up.

Social media sites like Facebook and MySpace have changed the way we communicate. They’ve also made it easier for men and women in relationships to carry on affairs.

Concord resident Mike Dutton says he knows people who use the sites to cheat on someone they’re in a relationship with. “[They’re] constantly, like racking up girls and not telling them about each other,” he said.

For those who are married, starting something online can end in divorce. A recent study found that 20% of divorce papers list Facebook as one of the reasons for separating.

“Sharing personal information is actually one of the basic components of intimacy,” said Charlotte attorney David Sheehan. Sheehan handles divorce and child custody cases.

“Cyber cheating allows individuals to reconnect with people they haven’t seen in many years – sometimes that they’ve had relationships with, or new individuals that they have yet to meet,” said Sheehan.

This communication can also be a factor in divorce proceedings. Sheehan points out, “We find everything under the sun. From people actually kissing… saying ‘I love you’ …expressing emotions to other individuals.”

Is technology to blame for cheating? A lot of people say no. “I think if somebody has the mentality to cheat. They’re going to do it regardless,” said Mount Holly resident Jessica Harper.

How can you avoid social media relationship problems? Experts say avoid writing anything questionable or suggestive. And, talk to your partner about how to handle potential communication with an ex.
